Challenges and Flora

Day 17, villalcazar de Sirga to Ledigos  29 km

Lots of challenges today. I knew the 17 km with only 3 picnic benches and no water the whole way would be tough, but I did it last time. However, today was hot and dusty, so though we were off by 6:30, we didn´t arrive until 3:30 for me, and 4 for Wendy. I went ahead, as there is only one albergue in this village, and I was concerned that we might be too late. Fortunately, there still were beds, and for the first time, I felt the need of a nap when I arrived.
I saw so many wonderful flowers today, but no way to download the pictures, and I can´t seem to get any off the web. I saw lilacs, almost done, poppies, every day, in the roadsides, spiria bushes, 2 kinds of wild roses with wonderful aroma, wild lavender, dandelions, daisies, a kind of wild geranius looking plant, thistle, bullrushes...
I heard frogs, and the cuckoo called several times in the morning.
I saw the sun rise this morning, over my shoulder.
And I am here, showered, my laundry done, so all is well.

  1. wonderful to read this post from you today Darlene.....remembering that same walk in May of last year, I can thoroughly empathise with how you are feeling this evening. So good to read that the flowers are giving you lots of pleasure.....shame about the heat and the dust. Please say Hi to Wendy...a Camino Hug from me to both of you.....sleep will tonight.

  2. Darlene and Wendy I had written a comment, then realized this is Saturday already and you are well on your way to Sahagun. You passed through the hamlet of Moratinos, wondering if you knocked on Rebekah's door for a cuppa.

Did you know that in the albergue with the Nuns in Sahagun, you can also access the museum that holds the tomb of one of the Spanish queens - heroin of the book The Spanish Whore by Rebekah Scott. Sahagun also hosts an Irish Pub with pretty good pilgrims menu (at least in 2012) Buen Camino to you two and we all will be talking about you for sure during our meeting this afternoon. Hugs Ingrid

  3. HI Darlene

Sounds like a tough day in the dust. Hope tomorrow brings you a cooling breeze.
Hope the church in Ledigos is open. If so true or false: there is an image of St. James as the moor slayer.

    1. The town was a so depressing and the church was closed, but yes, my guidebook says James is a moor slayer in Ledigos.

    2. Weird, I have it that it is St. James, in the beautiful image depicted as a pilgrim. What guide book are you using? Is this the same one that told you the Romanesque bridge was acutally Roman?
